                                                         Environmental Justice

What is Environmental Justice?

Environmental Justice refers to social groups affected by environmental hazards created from nature implied by the city's actions and racism. This problem starts systematically and is rooted in policies, practices, and disadvantages to groups, individuals, or communities of color. Environmental Justice is the study of finding how pollution affects areas based on color or race.

"Environmental justice is the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, national origin, or income with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies. In simpler terms, it means that everyone gets an equal chance at a healthy life and a healthy environment. (peanc.org)
Low-income families are targeted and threatened by their environment daily, and it affects their healths the most. Systematic racism takes place mainly in low-income areas where communications of color are living. This issue starts with the pollution from landfills, airplanes, coal plants, slaughterhouses, and many more hazards problems. These problems lower the quality of life for people and cause them a lot of health issues.
                                                                                                                                                                         Personal Experience

This issue is important to me because living in a low-income area, you experience these things, and we are taught it is normal. Most people you encounter have some asthma or other health problems, so you wonder why and the cause for it. Kids grow up breathing toxins from airplanes daily, and they fly close to your apartment that is shakes. In California, you can easily see the economic divide with the difference in the quality of life. If you travel to a high-income area, you won't encounter any landfills, bad smells, or even a coal plant. The scents from low-income to high are unrelatable. For example, the 1st thing you smell once you step foot in Vernon is the smell of dead meat from the famous Farmer Johns slaughterhouse. This slaughterhouse has eliminated any clean air for Vernon and has provided toxins. They do harm our environment and climate.
