Crime Rate

Increasing Crime Rate in El Sereno

History & Research

Plainly speaking, neightboorhoods with low income and minority residence commonly have higher crime rates. El Sereno is one of the oldest communities in LA and has stood similar since its beginings. Demographically speaking  it holds primarily Mexican residence with a low to medium income all around.

Just from March 24 to April 11 alone, over 50 surface levels crimes were commited and recorded. These crimes include events such as theft, assaullt, robbery, vandalism, and burglary.

Why It’s Important…

Considering that Cal State LA in at the edges of El Sereno, I believe the crime rates are something we should be aware of. In more recent weeks we have been recieving ongoing news from our school emails. Within the past month alone we have dealt with different cases of shooting, stabbing, and stand offs near or on our campus. Although campus itself has remained relatively safe these news reports don't make campus as welcoming as any other school should be.

Final Thoughts

The avid reoccurance of crimes in the El Sereno area are concerning. Even if one does not live within it, we all at least attend it’s university. We should not be coming to school feeling unsafe or uncomfortable due to any risks that may happen. Among conersations with other students, school doesn’t feel any safer with those who have night classes. Something needs to be done to inrease students safety rather than concern.
