The Beginning of the Tenants Right Revolution

As the Covid-19 pandemic began there is a group of Tenant Rights Lawyers who for years have gathered with the Boyle Heights/ East Los Angeles Community to fight the evil landlords who try to not only evict but mentally harass their tenants. The LACCLA community is built of Lawyers who donate their time to the tenants to help them defeat the landlords who harass and try to kick them out without a legal procedure. The reason I chose this area because it is a huge problem that has been a widespread ongoing issue that has gain more television attention due to the problems that have been going on ever since this Covid-19 pandemic began in mid-March. The eviction process began as soon as the pandemic began and this tenant-lawyer coalition started to gain more wind due to the amount of noise they began to create. The way LACCLA started to get more people on board is by making colorful flyers, or banners on the overpass by the freeways, or by protesting at councilmembers houses trying to get them to pass the cancellation of the rent since families as of now do not have the financial backing to pay the rent and sustain a living for you or your family.

This photograph above depicts the march and protest outside of Civil Hall near Grand Park in Downtown Los Angeles. Even during this epidemic these warriors will do whatever it takes for people to have a roof over their head along with their families. Rent is definitely an issue we have to pay more attention too if we want to all survive and be in unity.

This quote mentioned above directly translates to “Neighbors United Will Never be Defeated”. This slogan has been heard nationally due to the power that the members of LACCLA proclaim it, with this slogan and the fighting fury that the members have Rent Control has been introduced not only in the city of Los Angeles but the entire Los Angeles County. Before this worldwide pandemic hit the lives of the entire global population LACCLA was fighting for the injustices going on between tenants and landlords, such as harassment, emotional and physical disturbance and the community would meet every Saturday at La Casa del Mexicano on Calle Pedro Infante right in the heart of East Los Angeles. This historic Mexican site was once used as a movie set and has many historic events for the Hispanic Community which is the major ethnic group that LACCLA serves.

Shown above is a photograph of The Casa del Mexicano which is now home to the LACCLA community where they host their weekly meetings in an effort to help combat the fight against evil. This center has worked as a safe-haven for many individuals who face home insecurities with many people sometimes coming into this space with just a few days left before they get evicted the lawyers, Noah Grinsburg and Sarah Walckowhitz swiftly move into action to make sure these people get the help they so desperately need. It is not common seeing people who desperately help their people.

Jose and Silvia Nunez are tenants and members of the community of LACCLA fighting for their rights and the rights of other.

This “Matraca” is a huge emblematic piece to bring noise and awareness to the cause of Rent Control to different people and LACCLA uses this device to create noise at the protests that they are at. Throughout this pandemic they have had numerous protests such as Hilda Solis’s house but to no avail. The reason they go create awareness is so that people who have the power and authority to make the change people desperately need create that change and help people get out of poverty. Ever since this pandemic began most middle and low class people have to either decide whether to put food on the table or starve in order to pay the rent so they will not get evicted. Their hard work and dedication paved the way so that the November ballot had Rent Control but due to a unanimous decision it was denied but the fun doesn’t stop there. They have a never die attitude and are still fighting for the rights of the people.

Hope this article paves the way for many others to receive the help they may desperately need. Rent crisis right now is definitely an issue especially with the second shutdown due to the Coronavirus.
